Shipping and Receiving

Supervisor of Campus Services: John Steele

Shipping and Receiving handles general freight deliveries from UPS, FedEx, AIRBORNE, etc. Adhering to the following procedures will assist in ensuring prompt and precise actions from the Shipping and Receiving Department.

Daily Deliveries

All daily deliveries accepted by Shipping and Receiving are distributed to departments on the day of arrival, as soon as possible. Express deliveries from FedEx, UPS Next Day Air, and Airborne Express are given highest priority and are delivered as quickly as possible.  Bulk items will be put on hold until all daily deliveries are completed. Please have the vendor place a contact name and phone number on items being delivered for more efficient package delivery.

Bulk Items

When ordering bulk items, Shipping and Receiving should be notified one work week prior to delivery. Space is limited at the Shipping and Receiving dock, so arrangements for delivery of the items must be made prior to their delivery. It is imperative that space is available in the department or other arrangements have been made for storage of bulk items.

Furniture

Large orders of furniture should be delivered directly to the department. If this is not possible, prior to delivery, arrangements should be made with the department ordering the furniture, the company delivering the furniture, and the Supervisor for Campus Services. Most companies will have an assembly crew deliver and set up furniture in the department, but prior communication is requested to ensure reception does not occur at the Shipping and Receiving location.  If the contractor supplying the University with the new furniture has not been contracted to deliver and assemble the furniture, arrangements must be made with an outside moving company for department delivery prior to the day of initial delivery on campus. If you find yourself in need of assistance booking a moving company contact the Campus Service Coordinator’s office at (478) 301-2902.

Time or Temperature Sensitive Packages

Shipping and Receiving must be notified by the department of any time sensitive or temperature sensitive deliveries ahead of time. The department must sign for the package; otherwise, Physical Plant does not assume any responsibility for the contents of the package.

Shipments or Returns

Items that are being sent out from Mercer University through the Shipping and Receiving Department must have prepaid shipping labels. Acquiring the proper labels is the responsibility of the department involved in the transaction; it is not the Shipping and Receiving Department’s responsibility.
